Softball Earns Postseason Awards, Sets Records

The Olney Central College softball team earned some postseason recognition on Wednesday at the GRAC meetings held at Rend Lake College. The Lady Knights finished their season with a 41-24-1 record.  The 41 wins is a new high at OCC, besting the 39-win team from 2010. The team also set new records for hits (659), doubles (108), triples (24), RBI (353), and runs (418).

Individually, the following honors were awarded:

Region XXIV All Tournament Team: Baylee Waters (West Vigo), Kayala Hoppenjans (Heritage Hills) and Christian Chambers (North Central Farmersburg)

GRAC All-Conference 1st Team: Hollie Jones (Terre Haute South), Kayala Hoppenjans (Heritage Hills)

GRAC Freshman Player of the Year: Hollie Jones

 

Christian Chambers led the pitching staff, going 16-12 while throwing 155.1 innings. She struck out 120 while only walking 24. She finished with 2.16 ERA. 

Baylee Waters hit .472 and was 6th in the nation in triples with 9. She also drove in 31 runs and stole 26 bases while playing centerfield. 

Kayala Hoppenjans hit .348 and set a new team record for doubles with 23, which was 24th in the nation. She also hit 7 homeruns, and set a new team record for RBI with 65. She was also 12th in the nation in HBP with 14. 

Hollie Jones led the nation in hits this spring with 113, which shattered the previous team record of 76. She hit .483, which was 20th in the nation, and scored 76 runs, with was 17th nationally. On the basepaths Hollie was a perfect 53/53 (8th nationally), which broke the team record of 44.
