Softball Opens with Two Wins

Despite rain washing out a scheduled double header on Monday, the Lady Knights did get to open their season Sunday afternoon at Jackson St. CC in Jackson, TN. It was the first time outside for OCC due to the weather.

Shana Marti (Greenup, IL) was in control for six innings in the first game. Despite walking the first batter she faced, she struck out two of the next three to leave the runner stranded. Marti went on to strike out five for the game with just one walk. She allowed only 3 hits. Freshman lefty Bailey Walker (Clinton, IL) pitched a perfect 7th forcing two infield pop-ups.

Offensively four Lady Knights collected two hits apiece: Chelsea Presley (2-4, 3 RBI), Bailey Walker (2-5, 1 RBI), Allexis Lemon (2-2, 2 R) and Amber Miller (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B). The Lady Knights did strand 10 runners on base, but were able to break the game open with 5 runs in the 7th inning.

In game two, it was a matter of pitching into jams then pitching out of them. OCC surrendered just two hits in the game, but allowed Jackson to stay in striking distance because of 10 walks. Olivia Harrelson (Carmi, IL) got the win, pitching four innings, yielding one hit, with 6 K's and 6 BB's. Allexis Lemon (Washington, IN) came on in relief in the 5th and threw the final 3 innings, giving up one hit with 4 K's and 4 BB's for the save.

Kendra Jansen (Montrose, IL) and Cara Evans (Boonville, IN) provided the majority of the offense as Jansen went 2-3 with 2 RBI and a double while Evans went 1-2 with an RBI and a double as well. Rachael Kane (Evansville, IN) also had a double in the game.

OCC (2-0) will next play on February 27th at Roane State Community College in Harriman, TN. This will be the first stop on the way to Myrtle Beach for their spring break trip.
